Nothing screams summer like backyard bbq. On July 30, Chef Brian taught a Shirley J BBQ Cooking Class. We learned how to grill a pizza, make bbq pork and ribs and make a variety of BBQ sauces–all using Shirley J BBQ Sauce Mix.

Vanilla BBQ Sauce

using Shirley J BBQ Sauce Mix

Ingredients:
1 T. Worcestershire sauce
1 t. vanilla
2 c. water
3/4 c. Shirley J BBQ Sauce Mix

Directions:
In a saucepan combine all of the ingredients together and simmer for 5 minutes.

Spicy BBQ Sauce
using Shirley J BBQ Sauce Mix

Ingredients:
1 jalapeno (diced)
7 Japanese chili pods
3 c. water (divided)
3/4 c. Shirley J BBQ Sauce Mix

Directions:
In a saucepan combine jalapenos, Japanese chilies and 2 cups of the water. Cook covered on high for 10 minutes (this will cook off about 1 cup of water). Blend the liquid and the chilies in a blender until they are mostly smooth then add the additional cup of water and the Shirley J BBQ Sauce Mix Simmer for 5 minutes.

Root Beer BBQ Sauce
using Shirley J BBQ Sauce Mix

Ingredients:
2 c. root beer soda (any quality brand, not diet)
3/4 c. Shirley J BBQ Sauce Mix

Directions:
In a saucepan combine all of the ingredients together and simmer for 5 minutes.

Ingredients:
2 c. pineapple juice
3/4 c. Shirley J BBQ Sauce Mix

1 c. yellow prepared mustard
1 c. water

Ingredients:
3 T. molasses
1 t. vanilla
2 t. cider vinegar
2 c. water

Ingredients:
1 c. apple cider vinegar
1 c. honey
1/2 c. water
3/4 c. Shirley J BBQ Sauce Mix

Directions:
In a saucepan combine all of the ingredients together and simmer for 5 minutes.

Cranberry BBQ Sauce
using Shirley J BBQ Sauce Mix

Ingredients:
2c cranberry juice
3/4c Shirley J BBQ Sauce Mix

Directions:
In a saucepan combine all ingredients together and simmer for 5 minutes.

Shirley J Hawaiian BBQ Meatballs

Hawaiian BBQ Meatballs

Ingredients for meatballs:
1 ½ # lean ground beef
3 eggs
¾ c dry breadcrumbs
3 T Shirley J BBQ Sauce Mix
½ c crushed pineapple, drained

Directions:
Combine all ingredients and mix thoroughly. Scoop meat mixture and roll into meatballs; size may vary according to desire. Place meatballs on baking sheet and bake in 350 degree oven for 20-30 minutes until cooked thoroughly.

Ingredients for sauce:
½ c Shirley J BBQ Sauce Mix
1 c water
½ c plum sauce
½ c crushed pineapple
1 lb frozen meatballs

Directions:
In a crock pot on medium heat, add water, Shirley J BBQ Sauce Mix, plum sauce and crushed pineapple. Mix together and add the meatballs allow it to simmer for at least 15 minutes in the sauce before serving (the longer the meatballs cook in the sauce the more flavors they will absorb).

Cranberry BBQ Chicken Skewers

Ingredients:
1 1/2 lb. chicken tenderloins
12 6-inch bamboo skewers
1 (16 oz) can of jellied cranberries
1/4 c. Shirley J BBQ Seasoning
1/2 c. water

Directions:
Place one skewer into each piece of chicken lengthwise. Salt and pepper to taste, grill or sear in a pan or BBQ until the chicken is fully cooked. Baste with sauce (below) during cooking, if desired.

Sauce:
Combine the Shirley J BBQ Seasoning, water and cranberries and allow to sit for 5 minutes before serving. Use as a dip and as a basting sauce.

Mix up your next grilling party with Shirley J Products. There are a number of ways you can season your steak with Shirley J Products, but here are three to get you started.

Shirley J Beef Steak Rub

Ingredients:
1/4 – 1/2 c Shirley J Beef Slow Cooker/Dutch Oven Seasoning
Olive Oil

Directions:
Portion meat and brush with desired amount of olive oil. Then place Shirley J Beef Slow Cooker/Dutch Oven Seasoning on clean surface and spread. Place meat on seasoning and coat. Turn over meat and make sure entire surface is covered with seasoning. Grill to your liking. Should be enough rub for 2-4 steaks.


Shirley J Steak Marinade

Ingredients:
1-3 TB Shirley J Beef Slow Cooker/Dutch Oven Seasoning
1/4-1/2 cup oil

Directions:
Mix oil and seasoning together. Place meat in plastic bag and pour oil and seasoning mixture in bag. Let meat marinate for 1-4 hours. Grill.

Shirley J Steak Butter

Ingredients:
4oz Butter softened not melted (4oz = 1 stick)
1 ½ t Shirley J Pizza & Pasta Mix

Directions:
In a bowl combine both ingredients with the back of a spoon, until the seasoning is evenly distributed throughout the butter. Place on one end of a sheet of parchment / wax paper, and roll into a tube shape. Refrigerate and slice off desired amount and serve over steak or bread.

One of our favorite ways to use Shirley J BBQ Chicken Seasoning is to make it into a BBQ Sauce. The great thing about Shirley J BBQ Seasoning is that you can control it’s sweetness and tangyness! Try this recipe!

Shirley J BBQ Chicken & BBQ Sauce

Ingredients:
4 Chicken Breasts Halves, boneless & skinless
1 cup + 4 TB Shirley J BBQ Seasoning Mix (set aside 4 TB)
1/2 cup hot water
2 TB Vinegar, preferably white

Directions:
Mix hot water with 1 cup Shirley J BBQ Seasoning, add vinegar and mix until combined.
Tenderize chicken with meat mallet. Brush with olive oil and sprinkle 1 tablespoon of BBQ Seasoning per chicken breast half. Grill and top with BBQ sauce.
